‘Speed with silence, the absence of vibration, the mysterious harnessing of great energy, and a beautiful living organism of superb grace.’
Celebrating A Famed Figurine
The Phantom Scintilla Private Collection celebrates the Spirit of Ecstasy’s fleeting presence, dynamism and storied legacy, honouring both her essence and the ancient winged statue that inspired Claude Johnson, Managing Director of Rolls-Royce Limited, to write the original brief for a Rolls-Royce figurine in 1910.
Listen to those who brought this ethereal collection to life and explore the Bespoke craftsmanship behind its mesmerising design.
A Timeless And Graceful Icon
Sculpted in Parian marble with striking outstretched wings, the Winged Victory of Samothrace sparked Claude Johnson’s imagination during a visit to the Louvre in Paris, inspiring what would one day become the world’s most iconic figurine.
In tribute to the statue, the Private Collection’s Spirit of Ecstasy is crafted with a ceramic finish, alluding to the purity and translucency of Parian marble — a unique material that allows light to penetrate several centimetres, creating lustre from within.
EMBROIDERED ENERGY
Capturing the Spirit of Ecstasy’s expressive movement, an extensive embroidery cascades across the coach doors and twill fabric seats. Described by the Bespoke Collective as ‘painting with thread’, the embroidery utilises different colours, thicknesses, and stitch orientations to create a luminescent effect.
Complemented by illuminated perforations, the embroidered door motif is the most complex door design in Rolls-Royce history, featuring 633,000 individual stitches. By night, the embroidery takes on a mesmerising sparkle and appears to glow from within.
Requiring two and a half years of development, the seat and door artwork comprises a total of 869,500 stitches applied over 40 hours. Bespoke artisans crafted 36 individual embroidery frames before stitching them together, creating an uninterrupted flow of energy.
ribbons of fluidity
Running the width of the fascia is the Celestial Pulse Gallery. This Bespoke artwork continues the Spirit of Ecstasy’s fluid motion and flow of energy. Seven ribbons, each individually milled from solid aluminium, display a finely grained ceramic finish. The ribbon edges are polished to a mirror shine that captures light, contrasting the brushed aluminium backplate to create an interplay of reflectivity and texture.
AN ETHEREAL TRACE
Derived from Latin, the word ‘scintilla’ translates to spark — a bright flash witnessed only for an instant. Glimpsed for a moment yet leaving a lasting impression, the collection name reflects the Spirit of Ecstasy’s ethereal, fleeting grace.
The Fleeting Moment Starlight Headliner reimagines the figurine’s robes billowing in the breeze with an animated sequence of 1,500 hand-placed fibre-optic stars. Larger perforations reveal glimpses of metallic silver fabric, creating a subtle interplay of light.
AN AEGEAN PALETTE
Phantom Scintilla is presented in a flawless two-tone Bespoke finish. Andalusian White graces the upper body, while the lower body is adorned in Thracian Blue. The colourway evokes the sea around the island of Samothrace where the Winged Victory of Samothrace statue originates. The finish is enhanced with a hand-painted double Coachline and subtle metallic flakes, replicating the sparkle of sunlight on water.
